“You have to realise, in times like these, that there have always been times like these ... people have got through it, and you will get through it. You have the opportunity to be heroic and make a difference.”

Hi Reader -
Well, for me September was … a mixed bag.
After such a lovely summer, it’s been a letdown: health setbacks, tough work decisions, and the daily dose of global “cray cray” all took a toll on my headspace.
From chatting with friends, family, and colleagues, I don’t think I’m the only one feeling it.
When shit like this happens, I turn to the Stoics to reframe the bad and find the good, reminding myself that there’s always light to look for, and sometimes to carry. It even brought to mind an old doodle of mine (also shared in my book).
Oliver Burkeman writes about how our anxiety spikes when we live “inside the news,” stuck at the wrong level of engagement. Instead, he points to zen monk Paul Loomans’ idea of treating life as a string of beads.
Every action, big or small, becomes one bead threaded on. Hugging your child, sending your mom a message, preparing that report, dealing with coworker conflict, even witnessing tragedy, they all sit side by side.
The question is: which beads do you choose to add to your string?

1 Thought - Fight For Flex
Out in work land, there are some big shifts worth paying attention to: some worrying, some inspiring...
On one side, you’ve got AI startup founders pushing the 9-9-6 grind as a supposed innovation hack. Spoiler: it’s not, it’s a recipe for burnout! (hat tip: Kelly Berry)
On the other, “The Great Flexpectation” is taking root - 86% of UK workers now expect autonomy, better tech, and flexible benefits.
And just in time, as the CIPD in UK reports workplace absence is soaring! (Two weeks per employee each year, with stress and overwork a big factor.)
And the evidence for more flex keeps stacking up:
A 4-year study in Australia found people thrive with choice (WFH still tops the list).
Meanwhile, in Holland, a cultural norm of 4-day weeks is making people among the happiest and healthiest workers in the world.
It’s time to take a stand.
Not sure where to sit on the fence? These next resources may help you pick a side.
